Blantyre City Mayor for order at Limbe Market
Blantyre City Council Mayor Isaac Jomo Osman says he is committed to bringing order and sanity among vendors at Limbe Market.
On Sunday, the mayor led a cleaning exercise at the market in commemoration of Earth Day organised by Development Aid from People to People (Dapp) Malawi and NBS Bank plc where he said the council was enforcing order as part of instilling discipline among vendors to promote hygiene and sanitation at the market.

Said Osman: “We started by chasing vendors from the streets. Now, we want those selling clothes to be at one place.
“The same with those selling food so that buyers should know where they can get the goods, not along the streets. Every vendor should display merchandise at their designated slots.”
Dapp Malawi country director Moses Chibwana said they promote eco-conscious mindset among secondhand clothes vendors at the market.
“We engage our customers [vendors] in a number of environmental conservation interventions such as this to nurture their abilities to protect the environment. We have donated 10 bins for the same cause of keeping the market clean,” he said.
NBS Bank Limbe Service Centre manager Twaibu Mnani said they supported the initiative because they care for the people and the environment.
“The vendors are our customers and they should operate in a safe and clean environment for their sustainable development,” he said.
Limbe Market Vendors vice- chairperson Austin Chipolo promised to sustain the exercise.
